Features

240x160 Graphic LCD Displays offer a means to create simple images, icons, and text-based information. The available resolution determines how detailed and sharp the displayed content can be. A higher-resolution display will allow for more intricate graphics and more readable text.

240x160 Graphic LCD Displays can be interfaced with microcontrollers or other electronic components to control the content displayed. Depending on the specific model and manufacturer, these displays might offer different features such as backlighting, touch sensitivity, and various communication interfaces (e.g., SPI or parallel interfaces) for connecting with other devices.

What are the markets that use graphic LCD monitors?

Any application that needs to display more than just letters and numbers can use a graphic LCD display.

Air pumps that use graphic LCD displays are able to display more than just gallons or total dollars. They can now display advertisements and weather reports, you can enter a zip code, select a payment type, and even get a receipt through a touch screen interface attached to the display glass.

Graphic LCD Display Options

Fluid Options for Graphic LCD Displays

The three fluid types available for graphic LCD displays are FSTN, STN, and TN, although TN (twisted nematic) and STN (super twisted nematic) are seldom used in graphic LCDs. The main reason for this is that FSTN (Film Compensated Super Twisted Nematic) offers wider viewing angles and sharper contrast. STN or even TN can be used instead of FSTN to save money, but the lower performance rarely justifies the cost savings.

Backlighting Options for Graphic LCD Displays

Backlights are located behind the glass and are used to illuminate the display when ambient conditions are difficult to read. The most common type of backlight is an LED (Light Emitting Diode) LEDs have a very long life and do not produce the electrical interference common with CCFL and EL backlights.

If the size of the display is small enough, the manufacturer may use a sidelight instead of a backlight. Side-lit displays have the advantage of being thinner. Side-illuminated backlighting is not suitable for large glass sizes because it creates hot spots (bright and dark areas) on the display.

CCFL Backlighting and Graphic LCD Displays

CCFL is an excellent backlight for large displays. It provides a more uniform light stream and is thinner than LEDs. The downside is the availability of CCFL backlighting. They are virtually non-existent for monochrome graphic LCD displays.CCFLs also generate electrical noise that can interfere with adjacent circuitry.

Graphics LCD Display Controller Driver

The LCD controller driver chip (C/D) or IC is the small chip on the back of the LCD display. The LCD controller driver's job is to translate the customer's software or firmware into an image on the display.

It is common for LCD controller drivers to be discontinued over time. This means that your LCD monitor manufacturer will recommend an "equivalent" controller. As a general rule, we have found the equivalent controller driver to be compatible with older C/Ds an estimated 95% of the time. If you find that your current controller driver is about to be "obsolete", it would be wise to order a sample of a monitor with a new C/D that is compatible and will not be obsolete.
